Precisely
What’s the real cost of precision?
We dwell on perfection for way too long and end up with a lot of inaction. We stress about making everything fit neatly inside the box. We try to predict the outcome of things in order to manage our own feelings and expectations. A sort of combat shield. But, what if life is supposed to happen when you relinquish control, drop all of the armor, and allow yourself to be in the present? No expectations.
Wouldn’t precision cost less possibility?
Precision can cost intimacy, mystery, plausible deniability, freedom…. Precision can cost poetry. At the same time, lack of precision can cause misunderstandings, projection, and sometimes prolonged pain. Wanting something and being able to precisely say it are two different things.
Living in ambiguity can be infuriating. It’s true. Everyone needs a little reassurance that they are at least heading down the same path. However, what happens along the way and how each person participates in the creation of meaning might be the key to everything. And thinking of a key, a very precise object, it either fits or it doesn’t. But what the key opens is where the magic lies.
What is the ultimate lesson, then? Is it realizing that we are constantly building the reality we want to be a part of? If we try to shield ourselves from everything, are we caging ourselves and missing the point entirely? If we are counting steps, precisely, all it takes is one.
Life cannot happen without action. So, if you feel so inclined to use your metaphorical key, know that you are the one holding the power to unlock what could be.
The world is not ending today. It’s only just begun.
